Prices soar, and the world may face sugar shortage for six consecutive years
ICE raw sugar prices soared to an 11-year high as the world's largest sugar trader predicted another year of supply shortages in the market. The world's largest sugar trader predicted that global stocks of such sweeteners would decrease due to poor prospects for related crops in India, and the international sugar supply and demand market would run deficit data for six consecutive years.
"The world's sugar stocks may be near depletion," said Mauro Virgino, head of trade intelligence at Alvean Trading, controlled by Brazilian producer Copersucar SA. The weaker-than-expected performance on the supply side of major sugar-producing countries was the main factor driving up global sugar prices.
Due to extreme weather, the accumulated rainfall in sugarcane areas of India and Thailand, the world's major sugar producers, continues to lower their expected output in the next crop season. India is expected to ban sugar exports from October, while Thailand's sugar output is expected to be reduced to 7.5-9 million tons in the 23/24 crop season.
