International Business Newsletter-US retailers expect imports to fall by nearly 13%

American retailers expect the country's imports to fall by nearly 13% this year

US retailers forecast that US container imports will fall by nearly 13% this year, although the previous US container imports increased slightly during the peak shipping season.

Retailers will import about two million containers (measured in 20ft equivalent units) a month in August, September and October due to optimism about the holiday shopping season, the American Retail Federation's Global Port Tracker report said.

The small increase in imports is not enough to reverse this year's trade downturn, and the total import volume is expected to drop to 22.3 million containers for the whole year. The port tracking report predicts that container imports will reach 1.91 million in January 2024, up 5.4% year-on-year.
