Canada's manufacturing shipments recovered in July

Canada's manufacturing sales were stronger than expected in July, making up for most of the shortfall in June, despite the impact of a strike by West Coast port workers on raw material supplies and shipments.

Manufacturing shipments rose 1.6 percent month-on-month, beating Statistics Canada's prior estimate of 0.7 percent. Rising prices, especially for refined oil, were the main reason for July's increase.

Food sales rose strongly, recovering after five straight months of declines, car sales climbed to their highest since May 2017 and sales of oil and coal products rose after a sharp fall in June.
