India expects to ban sugar exports from October

India is expected to ban sugar exports from October, Reuters reported on the 23rd. If the ban takes effect, it will be the first time it has stopped sugar exports in seven years. India is only allowed to export about 6.1 million tons of sugar this crop season, according to the report. An Indian government source said that the current priority is to meet India's domestic sugar demand and use surplus sugar cane to produce ethanol, and it is not expected that there will be enough production for export next quarter.

Declining raw material production due to climate change is the main reason for the shortage of sugar supply. Up to now, the rainy season rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the two most important sugarcane growing areas in India, has been 50% lower than the average this year, according to the report.
