Is "Durian Freedom" Easier to Realize? Malaysian fresh durian is expected to be exported to China next year
As a unique tropical fruit, durian is famous for its rich fragrance and sweet taste. In recent years, Chinese consumers' love for durian has been growing, which has led to durian becoming one of the most sought-after fruits in the Chinese market.
According to Malaysian media, Malaysian Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Chen Hongjian said that from next year, Malaysian durian growers will be able to export fresh durian instead of frozen durian to China.
China responded positively to Malaysia's submission of an export agreement to China in August, Chen said. In order to ensure the best taste and quality, Malaysia can only export ripe fruits, which may pose challenges to transportation and sales because fruits have a short shelf life. The export agreement must address the problem of short shelf life.
Malaysia produced 455,000 tonnes of durian last year. Currently,10 percent of total durian production is exported in frozen form to mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Eric Chen, president of the Malaysian Durian Manufacturers Association, said they are discussing with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute ways to export fresh durian to China, including air and sea transportation.
Durian exports from Malaysia must go through customs clearance and take a four-hour flight to Nanning, or 48 hours after the durian is picked from the farm, before they can be sold in China, said Zhang Weishun, secretary-general of the Pahang Agriculture and Ecotourism Association. "That's why we prefer pre-selling to ensure that once the fruit is shipped to China, it can be bought by buyers as soon as possible," he said.
