Hong Kong suspends imports of poultry meat and poultry products from parts of the United States 



The Center for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government announced on November 6 that according to the World Organization for Animal Health, highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza broke out in Alabama, Iowa, South Dakota and some counties in California.


The Centre immediately instructed the trade to suspend the import of poultry meat and poultry products (including eggs) from the above areas to protect public health in Hong Kong.



According to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 21,470 tons of chilled and refrigerated poultry meat and about 57.11 million eggs from the United States in the first nine months of this year, a spokesman for the center said.


"The Centre has contacted the US authorities on the incident and will continue to closely monitor the news of the outbreak of avian influenza issued by the World Organisation for Animal Health and relevant authorities, and take appropriate actions according to the local epidemic situation," the spokesman said

       香港特区政府食物环境卫生署食物安全中心11月6日宣布,根据世界动物卫生组织通报,美国亚拉巴马州、艾奥瓦州、南达科他州以及加利福尼亚州部分县区爆发高致病性H5N1禽流感。


       中心即时指示业界暂停从上述地区进口禽肉及禽类产品(包括禽蛋),以保障香港公众健康。




       中心发言人称,根据政府统计处的资料,香港今年前九个月从美国进口约21470吨冰鲜和冷藏禽肉及约5711万只禽蛋。


       发言人还称:“中心已就事件联络美国当局,并会继续密切留意世界动物卫生组织及有关当局发出关于爆发禽流感的消息,根据当地疫情发展,采取适当行动。”
