Chinese enterprises account for nearly 50% of the cross-border e-commerce online shopping market in South Korea
According to the Korea Customs Office, from the first quarter to the third quarter of 2023, the amount of cross-border e-commerce online shopping in South Korea was 4.792826 trillion won (about 26.62 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 20.4%.
From the perspective of trading objects, the United States is 1.392878 trillion won, accounting for 29.1%; In China, the figure was 2.2217 trillion won, or 46.4 percent. In the first three quarters of this year, the amount of Chinese goods purchased by Korean consumers in Haitao soared by 106 percent year-on-year, far higher than the 9.7 percent increase in the United States.
Yonhap explained that the rising position of Chinese enterprises in the cross-border e-commerce online shopping market in South Korea is closely related to the rapid development of Chinese e-commerce enterprises. For example, AliExpress, a subsidiary of Alibaba, entered the Korean market in 2018 and quickly increased its market share by virtue of its price advantage.
Temu, a cross-border e-commerce company owned by Pinduoduo, is also growing significantly in the Korean market. From August to September, the number of Korean users of Temu increased from 520,000 to 1.7 million.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics of Korea, Chinese goods account for 26% of the cross-border e-commerce market in Korea. The highly similar fashion trends and cultural aesthetics make Korean consumers have a high acceptance of Chinese goods.
