International Business Newsletter-Japan's exports rose in September

Japan's exports rose in September, while exports to China fell 6.2%

Japan (JPN) exports rose more than expected in September, according to Bloomberg, suggesting external demand for Japanese goods remains resilient, while a weak yen boosts competitiveness.

Exports rose 4.3 percent year-on-year, driven by the first overall increase in shipments of automobiles and medical supplies in three months, according to a report on merchandise trade statistics released by Japan's Ministry of Finance (MOF), with economists forecasting a 3.0 percent increase.

Imports fell 16.3%, dragged down by crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal. The trade surplus reached 62.4 billion yen, the highest level since July 2021.

Exports to China (CHN) fell 6.2 percent, while exports to the United States and Europe rose 13 percent and 12.9 percent, respectively. Food exports to China fell 58 percent compared with the previous year as China banned Japanese seafood imports.

The Japanese government said September's export growth was the biggest since March and stronger than analysts had expected as shipments of cars, machinery and electronics rose while oil and gas imports fell sharply. The data showed strong activity in Japan's important manufacturing sector despite weak global demand.
