Despite severe political unrest and repeated flood disasters, the Port of Chittagong achieved a 7.4% growth in container throughput in 2024 compared with 2023.

Bangladesh's main port handled a total of 3.276 million TEUs in the just-concluded year, compared to 3.05 million TEUs handled in 2023, a record for the port.

In addition, the port handled 123 million tonnes of cargo throughput for the year, an increase of 3.1% compared to 2023. In addition, Chittagong Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman said that about 3,867 vessels called at the port in 2024.

"Despite nearly a month's disruption to the port's operations due to student uprisings, internet outages and flood-related issues, we achieved container handling records in 2024," he noted.

The port chairman pointed out that revenue increased and expenditure decreased last year.At the same time, the container handling volume at the Chittagong Inland Container Yard also saw a significant increase in the year just concluded. In 2024, 19 private sector off-site terminals handled approximately 750,559 TEU export containers, an increase of 13.5% over the previous year.
