The Air Cargo Equipment Assessment Program is Coming

The Air Cargo Equipment Assessment Plan is here (Please note for international air shipments)

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched the "Air Cargo Equipment Assessment Program", which aims to verify that air cargo tracking devices, data loggers and sensor-equipped devices meet industry safety standards.

The assessment program aims to support more efficient delivery of time-and temperature-sensitive cargo, reducing waste and maintaining cargo integrity, IATA explained.

For equipment manufacturers, the assessment program simplifies the verification process by eliminating duplicate documentation requirements, facilitates contact with airlines for equipment authorization and increases visibility in global markets, the trade body said.

Airlines are expected to benefit from safer operations, fewer undeclared equipment, a streamlined internal approval process, and a consolidated repository of approved equipment. Shippers and freight forwarders have centralized access to approved equipment information for better route planning and carrier selection.

This device assessment program verifies compliance with IATA Recommended Practice 1693, which provides critical safety guidelines for electromagnetic compatibility and battery safety.Verification data is accessible through ONE Source, which provides a single point of access for stakeholders searching for approved tracking devices.

"The fastest growing areas of air cargo are pharmaceuticals, perishables, electronics and high-value commodities. Shippers rely on a variety of battery-powered electronic devices to monitor these sensitive shipments to ensure their integrity. The IATA Air Cargo Equipment Assessment will confirm that these devices meet stringent industry safety standards." Brendan Sullivan, head of global freight at IATA, said.

The Box, LivingPackets Group's reusable packaging solution, is the first product to be validated through the Equipment Evaluation Program.

Denis Mourrain, Group Chief Operating Officer of LivingPackets, said: "IATA verification is critical to The Box because our customers want to know that our products meet global standards. Verifying its stringent safety standards through IATA, Making our products universally recognized in the air cargo industry. This is especially important for innovations like The Box, which is the first smart reusable packaging for air cargo. The air cargo equipment evaluation gave it immediate global recognition. "
