International Shipping Container Fire at Montreal Port, Canada (Lithium Battery again)
On September 23rd, a container loaded with 15 tons of lithium batteries broke out in Montreal Port, Canada. The smoke covered several kilometers, triggering a second-level alarm. The fire station responded quickly, evacuated residents and cut off the power. Because the combustion characteristics of lithium batteries were difficult to control, firefighters soaked the fire in water for external cooling, and finally controlled the fire in the early morning of the next day and completely extinguished it at 7am. The port team is investigating the cause of the fire and dealing with the scene.
At about 3:15 pm local time on September 23rd, a container containing about 15 tons of lithium batteries broke out in Montreal Port, Canada. The Montreal Fire Department responded quickly and dispatched more than a dozen firefighters and hazardous materials intervention teams to the scene for disposal.
After the fire broke out, the city government of Montreal quickly issued a blockade order for surrounding residents, asking them to stay indoors and close doors, windows and external ventilation systems to prevent the inhalation of toxic smoke. The blockade order was lifted around 10:30 that night, after 50 to 100 residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure and the power supply to the incident area was cut off.
A big challenge for fire officials lies in the special nature of lithium batteries, which produce extremely high heat when burned and can trigger a chain reaction, making fires difficult to control.
According to reports, more than 100 firefighters were involved in the fire fighting operation, and they had to resort to special equipment, such as a drill bit borrowed from the airport fire brigade, to try to enter the inside of the container to put out the fire.However, due to safety concerns, the fire department ultimately chose to soak the outside of the container with water to cool the batteries and stop the spread of the fire.
After several hours of intense fighting, the fire was largely under control by around 10 p.m. that day, but firefighters still had to continue to deal with the residual source of fire inside the container.By 7 a.m. on September 24, the fire was completely extinguished.The Montreal Port team then launched an investigation to determine the specific cause of the fire and arranged for a special team to handle the removal of materials on site.
