Panama Canal queuing-free auction price soared

Queue-free auctions for transit hours at the Panama Canal have soared recently, with a $2.4 million bid from a ship owner. The Panama Canal Authority's auction for spot crossings allowed shipowners without reservations to skip queues, but bids have soared recently because the waterway is limited to 32 crossings per day.

At the Avance Gas second-quarter earnings conference call held last week, CEO ø ystein Kalleklev said that the winning bid price rose rapidly in early August, exceeding US $1 million, and then exceeding US $2 million. Two weeks ago, an owner paid US $2.4 million for the winning bid price.

For gas shipowners like Avance, if the waiting time in the canal suddenly increases, a ship may not reach the port on the east coast of the United States in time, and the shipowner will lose the cargo destined for the ship.
