Finnish International Air Transport's overall revenue declines in 2024


Finnair, Finnair's flagship airline, blamed lower cargo revenue and yields for one of the reasons for the overall revenue decline in the first quarter of this year. The airline's cargo revenue in the first quarter of 2024 was 46.3 million euros, down from 2023. 53.4 million euros in the same period of the year.


Finnair's revenue cargo tonne kilometers actually increased by 11.6% year-on-year, while total cargo tonnage increased by 11.9%; Freight revenue decreased by 13.3% year-on-year, mainly due to the decline in freight revenue.


In 2023, Finnair will earn 192 million euros from the cargo business. "In the global air cargo market, supply has increased and demand has been weak, so market prices have fallen, resulting in Finnair's cargo revenue being lower than in the same period," the airline said.


Finnair celebrated the 100th anniversary of its first cargo flight from Helsinki on March 20,1924. The first commercial flight of Finnair (then known as Aero) was a German-registered Junkers F 13 D-335, which crossed the Baltic Sea from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia, carrying 162 kilograms of mail.


Today, Finnair is a network airline specializing in transporting passengers and cargo between Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America. Although Finnair has operated cargo planes in the past, most cargo is currently carried by 25 wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus a350. Mail accounts for only a small part of the cargo transported.
