Imports from the top ten gateway ports in the United States increased by 20%

According to foreign media reports, according to the latest data from the famous analyst John McCown, the imports of the top ten gateways in the United States increased by nearly 20% year-on-year.

Total U.S. imports last month were just under 1.82 million TEUs, with data from ports on the East and Gulf Coast improving for the first time in seven months, rising 21.9 percent. Los Angeles remained the country's most important import gateway, with throughput slightly below 380,000 TEUs, a slightly below-market increase of 18.6 percent.

New York and New Jersey ranked second, with a throughput of 343,000 TEUs, an increase of 19.6%; Long Beach ranked third with a throughput of 302,500 TEUs, the slowest growth among the top ten ports, with an increase of 8.4%. However, the fastest growing port was Oakland, with a throughput increase of 38.4% year-on-year to 83,500 TEUs.

At the same time, the export volume of the United States also continued to rise, increasing by 7.6% year-on-year in one month to 930,500 TEUs, and Los Angeles replaced Houston as the country's main export port. Los Angeles handled 144,718 TEUs of export volume, while Houston handled 134,221 TEUs.

However, the performance of some other major ports was more complicated-for example, exports from the Port of Long Beach fell by 21.3% in March 2023, and exports from the ports of Norfolk and Charleston were roughly flat.
