German shipping giant acquires Austrian land container company

The Port of Hamburg Logistics Group (HHLA), a German port and terminal operator, has acquired a majority stake in Roland Speech, one of Austria's largest inland container operators.

HHLA will acquire 51 percent of the shares, while the remaining 49 percent is still held by co-shareholders Christian Gutjahr and Nikolaus Hirnschall, who will continue to manage the company's business.

With an annual throughput of about 130,000 TEUs, Roland Spedition is one of Austria's largest owner-led inland combined transport container operators. The network spans central and southern Europe, connecting the ports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam and Antwerp, as well as Koppel and Trieste.

HHLA will integrate Roland's service portfolio into its European seaport terminal network in Hamburg, Tallinn, Trieste and Odessa, as well as multimodal hinterland connections and inland terminals.

Shareholders and managing directors Christian Gutjahr and Nikolaus Hirnschall have led the company since 2005 and will continue to serve as partners and managing directors.
