South Carolina port throughput up 12% year-on-year in March

South Carolina Ports reported 216,410 TEUs of containers in March, up 12 percent year-on-year, while terminal container throughput was 118,481 units, up 11 percent year-on-year.

"Demand for cargo routes is high on the East Coast of the United States, and our strategic location in the booming Southeast allows us to achieve long-term growth," said Barbara Melvin, president and CEO of SC Ports. "South Carolina Ports provides our customers with efficient, capable and reliable port services."

The inland ports of Greer and Dillon shipped a total of 18,978 containers in March, an increase of 8% over the previous year. Rail traffic at the inland port of Greer increased by 22% year-on-year, and the team handled 16,088 containers of cargo for advanced manufacturers, solar panel manufacturers, material producers and retailers.

"Our inland ports are doing very well and we are moving more goods by rail than ever before," Melvin said. "The ongoing expansion of the inland port of Greer will provide more capacity and rail capacity to move goods quickly between the port of Charleston and the inland market."

"As South Carolina's economy booms, we are investing in modernizing docks, expanding freight capacity, and building rail-serviced naval base multimodal transport facilities to ensure quality port services for businesses that rely on our efficient port operations," Melvin said.
