International shipping company Maersk upgrades ME2 container service

Danish shipping company Maersk has decided to upgrade its ME2 container service by adding port calls to major northern European destinations. In particular, from the third week of April, Maersk will include Rotterdam, Felixstowe and Bremerhaven in the scope of ME2 service rotation.

"The strategic extension of ME2 services to major Nordic destinations will benefit exporters in northern India, particularly those in the lifestyle and retail sectors," Maersk said in the announcement, adding that manufacturers and exporters will gain faster access to important Nordic consumer markets.

The Copenhagen-based shipping company said the shipping transit time between the Mumbai port and Northern Europe will be reduced by five to seven days, while importers in the auto industry will benefit from the reduction in the transit time of auto parts entering India in the return transportation from Northern Europe to India.

"By increasing port calls to major destinations in Northern Europe, our customers have faster access to important markets, enabling them to take advantage of business opportunities and increasing their competitiveness," said Morten Juul, regional marine management director for the Indian subcontinent, Middle East and Africa at Maersk.

Despite the expansion, the nominal capacity of weekly ME2 services will remain unchanged. However, Maersk will deploy two more ships to accommodate expanded coverage in Northern Europe.
