South Korea will develop its own international shipping container fleet
As part of a plan to develop its own container fleet, the South Korean government will allocate about $2.5 billion to increase the fleet of SM Line and other South Korean branch operators by 100,000 TEU.
Korea Marine Corporation (KOBC) will provide financial support for the construction of environmentally friendly ships by purchasing green bonds issued by shipping companies or reducing loan interest rates. State-owned policy banks Korea Industrial Bank (KDB) and KOBC can also invest a certain proportion of environmentally friendly new ships.
Trade between South Korea and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is growing rapidly. According to customs, the container throughput between South Korea and ASEAN countries in the first quarter of this year was 1,008,682 TEUs, an increase of 14% over the same period last year.
However, the rising trade flow has not led to higher profits for Korean intra-Asian shipping lines, as major line operators such as Maersk Sealand and CMA CGM have been competing fiercely.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol revealed the figure at the opening ceremony of the seventh container terminal in Busan Port on April 5. His goal is to increase South Korea's container fleet to 2 million TEUs by 2030, which is consistent with the South Korean government's strategy.
On April 15, South Korea's flagship shipping company HMM announced plans to expand its fleet size from the previous 1.2 million TEUs to 1.5 million TEUs by 2026.
