Kenya International Air Transport's second cargo plane put into operation
Kenya Airways has put its second Boeing 737-800 freighter into operation and hopes the extra capacity will help the airline meet growing demand for maritime aviation to West Africa.
The second aircraft arrived in Kenya at the end of March and began flying for the airline in early April. Kenya Airways received the first 737-800F aircraft earlier this year, and the two aircraft join Kenya Airways' existing two 737-300F aircraft.
Peter Musola, head of Kenya Air's cargo operations, said the two new aircraft will have a range larger than 300f and will be used to fly to destinations in the Middle East and India, particularly Sharjah and Mumbai, as well as Africa.
Another factor, Mussola said, is sea air traffic in the Middle East, as shippers want to avoid longer routes for ships to reach West Africa by bypassing the Cape of Good Hope due to missile attacks in the Red Sea. Kenya Airways already serves many destinations in West Africa and is therefore able to take full advantage of sea air demand.
The company is also exploring the possibility of adding cargo flights to Dubai World Central, one of the region's major sea and air hubs, though he added that these plans precede the growth of sea and air transport and will help meet export demand (meat and perishables).
