International Shipping Port of Portland will cease operations in October
According to several US media reports, the Port of Portland has decided to stop its container business in October due to financial difficulties.
Oregon's major ports appear to be facing financial difficulties, with the Port of Portland saying it cannot afford to open its container terminal until September as agreements with third-party operators have not yet been completed.
The Port of Portland has lost more than $30 million over the past three years, including an estimated shortfall of $14 million this year, according to OPB data.
Keith Leavitt, Port of Portland's chief trade and economic development officer, wrote in an email to industry stakeholders:"We know that this terminal is an important statewide asset-proposing a fiscally sustainable business model for container services that has more state funding and investment is worthy of further discussion. At this time, we have no financial options and must take this step."
