Focus on logistics newsletter-The largest port in the Middle East ranks the top ten in the world

The largest international shipping port in the Middle East ranks among the top ten in the world

Dubai/Jebel Ali, the largest container port in the Middle East, has re-entered the top 10 of the global container port rankings, surpassing Europe's largest port, showing the scale of Europe's economic recession, the Alphaliner report said.

Jebel Ali Port handled 14.47 million TEUs in 2023, up from 13.97 million TEUs in 2022, bringing UAE ports back into the top ten after their exit in 2019. The rise of Jebel Ali Port will also push sluggish Hong Kong ports Out of the top 10, Hong Kong's container throughput fell 14% year-on-year to 14.34 million TEUs.

Rotterdam led Dubai in 2019, but container throughput fell 7% in 2023, handling 13.45 million TEUs, the second consecutive year of decline. Due to sanctions, Dutch ports have been hit by nearly all losses of Russian cargo, and Europe's economy Recession means a sharp contraction in European consumer demand.

China's ports have experienced another year of strong growth, with Qingdao posting the highest growth rate among the world's major ports. It handled about 30 million TEUs in 2023 and is now competing with Shenzhen, which handles 29.9 million TEUs, for the world's fourth largest container port status.

Alphaliner said:"While exports to Russia remain strong, growth in China is expected to slow in 2024 and demand from the West will weaken in the fourth quarter. China's grip on the global market will tighten in 2023, accounting for the top 30. More than half of the market throughput (51%) compared to 49% in 2022. Overall, the top 30 ports will grow by an average of 1.7% this year."
