Singapore is the world's leading maritime center in international shipping
Singapore remains the world's leading maritime hub, according to a number of global surveys. The Lion City ranks first, followed by Rotterdam and London, according to the Leading Sea Cities 2024 (LMC) by DNV and Menon Economics. The report said the city-state is expected to remain that position for the next five years.
Shanghai and Oslo are ranked fourth and fifth respectively. The authors of the report believe that Shanghai's importance will rise in the next five years, becoming the second most important marine city in the world. Meanwhile, Dubai is expected to become one of the top five aviation hubs in the world in the next few years.
The ranking model includes objective and subjective indicators of the top 50 marine cities in the five pillars. Among the top 50 cities in the world, each pillar has an equal weight (weight is 20%).
The five pillars are shipping, maritime finance and law, ports and logistics, attractiveness and competitiveness, and maritime technology-notably, the Korean port city of Busan topped the list.
Singapore is the founder of Sea Week, which has gained momentum since 2006 and has been emulated around the world. This year's award was launched by Singapore Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat, who said Singapore aims to become a global hub for innovative, reliable and resilient maritime operations and maritime talent.
