Global international air freight market conditions have improved

Delta Air Lines' cargo revenue declined at a slower pace in the first quarter, reflecting an overall improvement in global air cargo market conditions.

Atlanta-based Delta reported record first-quarter adjusted revenue of $12.6 billion on Wednesday, but cargo revenue fell 15 percent year-over-year to $178 million.

Delta Air Lines' cargo revenue fell 24% to $188 million in the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was the busiest period for cargo business. At that time, cargo revenue was down 28% to 37% from the same period in 2022. Delta Air Lines) full-year cargo sales fell 31% to $723 million.

Delta isn't the only company negatively impacted by the prolonged international cargo recession. Most hybrid and all-cargo airlines saw revenue fall 25 to 50 percent last year, or more. Shipping demand and rates have improved steadily since September, with global air cargo volumes up about 12 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, according to market data providers.

The airline attributed its revenue growth to domestic, international and corporate business travel, as well as good operations, with operating income up 17 percent to $640 million. The airline said business travel growth has been accelerating since the start of the year and expects record business revenue in the second half of the year.
