Korea Busan New Port Launches the Seventh Container Terminal

The seventh container terminal in Busan New Port of Korea has been launched to expand the container capacity.

The terminal was inaugurated on April 5 in the presence of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yue, who hailed the facility as a milestone for Busan Port to become a world-class intelligent port and a global logistics center.

The new facility is the country's first fully automated terminal, using remotely controlled ship-to-shore cranes, which were built in South Korea. Compared with other terminals, the automated process is expected to increase the port's productivity by 20% and significantly reduce the risk of safety-related accidents.

The development project will be carried out in stages, and the new port expansion plan will continue until about 2040-2050. According to the Busan Port Authority, the entire expansion project will cost about 32 billion US dollars.

In 2023, the throughput of Busan Port will be 22.75 million TEUs, an increase of 3.1% over 2022.
