China's international shipping bulk carrier operators are expanding their scale

China's bulk carrier operator Jinhui Shipping and Transportation is expanding its fleet, securing its first long-term charter deal this year.

The Oslo-and Hong Kong-listed company, better known for its second-hand trading activities, has signed a contract with the Singapore subsidiary of Chinese company Zhejiang Shipping for at least 22 months to build the Pacific Lilly, a very large ship built in 2016.

The agreement is worth about $10 million, or $16,500 a day, and the Marshall Islands-flagged 61,452-dwt freighter will be delivered on May 8, with an option to extend the lease for another two months.

This will be the company's third charter, adding 24 bulk carriers to its portfolio following the 2021 kamsarmax Ever Shining, which was signed in December last year.

Commenting on the latest move, Jinhui said the benefit of locking in a long-term contract with a minimum rent is to bypass inflationary pressures on borrowing costs and other cost changes that the company must bear and buy the ship directly.
