New York Port and New Jersey Port Welcome the Busiest Month in 2024

In February 2024, New York Port and New Jersey Port saw significant increases on various indicators, including total volume, imports, exports, rail and car transportation, making it the second busiest February on record.

Total traffic in February was 632,455 TEUs, up 10.7 percent from the same period in 2023. Year-to-date figures show the port handled 1,299,801 TEUs in the first two months of 2024.

In February, imports from the port reached 332,241 TEUs, a sharp increase of 15.2%. In January-February, imports from New York and New Jersey ports were 675,031 TEUs, an increase of 10.2% over the same period of last year. Exports totaled 101,636 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 3%.

In addition, empty exports rose 7.3 percent in February 2024 to a total of 196,213 TEUs, with year-to-date figures also showing a 6 percent increase, with empty exports reaching 414,091 TEUs in 2024 compared with 390,579 TEUs in the same period in 2023. From January to February 2024, empty imports increased by 55.8 percent over the same period in 2023.

Rail freight volume jumped 17.2 percent, handling 52,948 containers in February. Year-to-date, it is up 7.1 percent year-on-year. Car shipments rose 5.1 percent in February, with 24,805 vehicles passing through U.S. ports. Car sales in the first two months of this year were up 14.5 percent compared with the same period in 2023.
