Upgrade of $31.5 million container yard in Houston port completed
McCarthy Construction completed the $31.5 million upgrade of the Barbours Cut Terminal container yard for the Houston Port Authority. The project is part of a modernization program to improve cargo handling efficiency. McCarthy completed the restoration of the existing site, one month ahead of schedule.
The scope of the project includes dismantling old underground facilities and installing new ones, including laying a total of 695 feet of reinforced concrete pipes, laying 3,300 feet of ditches 4 to 5 feet deep, modifying roads entering the site, and laying 3.5 feet of foundation before laying joint forced pavement and compacted pavement by roller.
McCarthy also recently started construction of Pier 4 and Pier 5 at Barbours Cut, having already completed Pier 1, Pier 2 and Pier 3.
The scope of the project includes rebuilding the dock with a total length of 1,333 feet, adding additional support piles to the new 100-foot specification ship-to-shore crane, upgrading the power infrastructure, installing new waterlines, and demolishing and rebuilding several support buildings on the site. McCarthy will also do all concrete-related work on his own.
McCarthy completed Barbours Cut Terminal Container Yard 3 North in April 2022 and 1 North and 2 North Container Yards in 2020. Terminals 4 and 5 are scheduled to be completed in early 2026.
