International shipping Baltimore Port temporary waterway passes the first ship!
Six days after Baltimore's port was closed, a fuel barge became the first ship to use a makeshift passage near the Francis Scotkey Bridge. The makeshift passage leads to the northeast side of the collapsed bridge, under parts of the still standing bridge, with water depths of 11 feet, allowing shallow draft traffic such as barges.
At 3 pm local time on April 1, the first ship to pass through the temporary passage was a fuel barge, which was propelled by the tugboat Crystal Coast and carried jet fuel to Dover Air Force Base.
The Critical Bridge Response Unified Command said the temporary passage was part of a phased approach to reopening the main passage, with crossings limited to the discretion of port captains and used only during the daytime. A second temporary passage, with a draft of 15-16 feet, is currently being established to allow large vessels to pass.
Two crane barges, a 650-ton crane and a 350-ton crane continue to be used to clean up the wreckage of the bridge, which collapsed on March 26 after being hit by the Maersk Group container ship DALI.
With the port expected to shut down mass commercial traffic for at least six weeks, export cargo remains stranded on the docks, while major container shipping lines are moving imported boxes to other ports on the U.S. East Coast, such as Newark and New York.
