The backlog of international shipping in Vancouver Port is serious

Last year, the backlog of bulk, grocery and container cargo at Canada's largest port reached an unprecedented 150.4 million tons, said Peter Xotta, director of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

About 79 percent of household goods come from China, with Vietnam and South Korea in second place. Decreases in imports of building materials and industrial and auto parts have also exacerbated the decline in container volumes. Increases in container exports, especially those loaded with wood pulp and specialty crops, have helped offset the decline in inbound volumes.

Xotta said a 13-day strike by dockers in BC province and continued disruptions to trade routes in the Red Sea and Panama Canal all posed challenges to port operations due to the slowing economy, adding that its overall exports to 142 countries were up 12 percent despite the hurdles.

Grain and crude oil, which were received most by China and the United States respectively, drove a surge in bulk exports after a bumper crop harvest and a record surge in production in Alberta. Meanwhile, the number of vehicles entering Canada through the port rose 36 percent to more than 454,000 as manufacturers straightened out their supply chains.

However, routes between East Asia and the West Coast are generally less affected. While freight rates from East Asia to the western United States have tripled in the past year, freight rates in the opposite direction have fallen 28%, according to Xeneta, a freight analysis company.
