GPA Authorizes Improvement of International Shipping Container Yard

The Georgia Port Authority (GPA) has authorized contracts totaling $65.6 million for container yard improvements at Savannah Port Marine Terminal, which covers an area of 810,000 square meters and is located downstream of GPA's main container port.

GPA's board of directors approved three project components, including tamping land, preparing for container stacking, dismantling the former bridge wharf, and initial utility installation behind the wharf structure. In addition, the work will be funded by revenue bonds issued by GPA in 2022.

Previous upgrades to the ocean terminal have been approved, including the purchase of eight ship-to-shore cranes, renovation of the terminal structure and construction of a direct interchange to the United States 17. After all planned work is completed, the annual throughput of the ocean terminal will increase from 300,000 TEUs to more than 1.5 million TEUs.

In addition, the ports of Brunswick and Savannah will benefit from a total of $82.7 million from the federal government for maintenance dredging and port improvements as part of six budget plans passed by the U.S. Congress on March 8, 2024. About $38 million will be allocated to the ports of Brunswick.

In addition, construction has begun on a larger U.S. Customs inspection facility in Savannah Port, which will double its current location. The project, worth $44.5 million, includes the relocation of U.S. Customs operations from the Garden City terminal to an adjacent 27,900-square-meter building. The expanded space will facilitate federal inspections by customs and other agencies.
