There has been no marine ship passing through Suez Canal for two months

According to new data released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), no LNG carrier has passed through Suez Canal for more than two months.

The last LNG ship to pass through the Egyptian waterway was on Jan. 16, after which the deteriorating security situation in the Red Sea led to a massive rerouting of gas carriers around the continent.

Total trade through the Suez Canal fell by 50pc year-on-year in the first two months of 2024, while trade through the Cape of Good Hope is estimated to have surged by 74pc, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Last year, the Suez Canal crossing generated $10.25 billion in revenue for Egypt, a figure the Suez Canal Authority has acknowledged could be cut to around $5 billion this year.

The latest figures from Clarksons Research show total arrivals by all types of merchant ships in the Gulf of Aden are 72pc below the level recorded in the first half of December.

Clarksons Research
