Finland's main trade union announced an extension of the strike period

After the failure of negotiations with the government on employees' rights and social security, the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) took action to start the strike procedure in an all-round way from 6:00 am on March 11 to 6:00 am on March 25.

However, just as the strike was coming to an end this week, Finland's main trade union abruptly announced that it would extend the strike period until at least April 1. This will cause up to 90% of the Nordic country's foreign trade to be interrupted.

According to reports, since March 11,7000 workers have gone on strike, import and export trade has basically stagnated. The specific targets of the strike include Viking Shipping's freight business in Helsinki and Turku, while passenger services will remain normal and unaffected. At the same time, the strike also extended to Neste's storage facilities and oil tankers.

According to the news released by the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions, many trade union organizations including Finnish Industry Association, Automobile and Transport Workers Union AKT, Service Trade Union PAM, Construction Trade Union, Public and Welfare Trade Union JHL and Power Trade Union have participated in the strike.

Finland's major ports, including Helsinki, Kotka, Turku and Lauma, will have to suspend container operations for another week because of ongoing strike action. Container terminal operators point out it could take days to clear the backlog once dockers return to work.

Finnsteve, which operates terminals in Helsinki and Turku, has made it clear that all operations, including the unloading, loading, receiving and delivery of all types of large installations, have been suspended due to the strike. Once the strike is over, there will inevitably be delays in freight shipments, which may lead to a further backlog of goods to and from Finland.
