Focus on logistics newsletter-The container volume of Los Angeles and Long Beach Port has increased

The container volume of Los Angeles and Long Beach Port has increased significantly

Container volumes at Los Angeles and Long Beach are growing significantly, and the trend is expected to continue. Meanwhile, cargo from Asia's peak season this year is likely to arrive in the U.S. earlier than usual, adding to the busyness at West Coast ports.

Port of Los Angeles handled 781,434 TEU in February, up 60 percent year-on-year, with import container throughput up 64 percent to 408,764 TEU. Long Beach also performed well, with container throughput up 24.1 percent year-on-year to 674,723 TEU last month and imports up 29.4 percent to 329,850 TEU.

The throughput of these two important ports far exceeded the level of last year. The throughput of Los Angeles Terminal increased by 35% in two months, while the throughput of Long Beach Terminal increased by 20.7%. Gene Seroka, executive director of Los Angeles Port, said:"The market confidence in the port remains strong, and the operating data shows that the cargo flow is efficient and there is still additional capacity available."

Another sign of the growth in demand for trans-Pacific routes is the surge in the number of empty containers shipped back to Asia: the number of empty containers returned to Los Angeles increased by 54% to 240,000 TEU; Return trips to Long Beach rose 45 percent to 257,000, TEU.Seroka said:"Don't be surprised to see goods arriving early in the peak season on the West Coast. Los Angeles capacity is maintained at 75% to 80%, and we are ready to deal with various situations."

However, while some shippers and analysts have raised concerns about the San Pedro Bay port's ability to handle additional throughput, Seroka said on the sidelines of the TPM24 meeting that the port had learned from severe congestion in 2021 and early 2022 and was now "more resilient".
