International shipping company ONE reached the first EUA transaction
Singapore-based container shipping line Ocean Network Express (ONE) has announced its first EU Subsidies (EUA) deal with Paris, France-based global banking and financial services firm BNP Paribas.
From 1 January 2024, shipping has been included under the EU's Emissions Trading System (ETS), where shipping lines are empowered to monitor, report and verify their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually, and the data will be used to determine the EUA they need to submit during the compliance period. Failure to comply with these rules will result in penalties and denial of entry to EU/EEA member countries.
In preparation for immediate compliance with the EU's emissions trading system, ONE said it had strengthened its internal systems to accurately reflect carbon dioxide emissions data. Under the procedures, it also opened a trading account on the Union Registry to hold and transfer EUA.ONE stressed that in this way it was able to secure its first acquisition of the EUA from BNP Paribas on February 8.
According to ONE's announcement, the acquired EUA will then be transferred to their respective shipowners according to the agreement and the provisions of the EU emissions trading system, which will finally enable shipowners to fulfill their concession obligations to the EU before September 30,2025.
"The EU carbon emissions trading system is the cornerstone of the EU's policy to deal with climate change and a key tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The EUA agreement with ONE is very important for Asian airlines, which shows that it has made active preparations for complying with the EU emissions trading system," BNP Paribas Singapore said.
