Wan Hai Lines had a net loss of $188.5 million last year

Taiwan's Wan Hai Lines will issue $320m in bonds to improve its financial structure after falling into a loss.

Wanhai posted a net loss of $188.5 million in 2023, worsening its net profit of $3.04 billion in 2022, ending 13 consecutive years of profit. Wanhai last posted a net loss in 2009, when the global financial crisis caused the company to lose $50.56 million.

Wanhai, a predominantly intra-Asian shipping company, re-entered long-haul routes in mid-2020. The company launched a separate Asia-US West Coast service that year, followed by a separate Asia-US East Coast service in 2021. To support this expansion, Wanhai acquired 18 new ships with 13,000 TEU.

However, Wanhai's fortunes began to evaporate as the pandemic-fueled boom vanished in mid-2022, with the company posting a loss in the fourth quarter of 2022. The company's losses have continued since then.

The announcement of the bond issuance was released on March 13, the same day financial results for 2023 were released. No more details, such as term and interest, were disclosed. Wanhai had net assets of $6.73 billion and total liabilities of $4.11 billion as of December 31,2023.
