Several international air transport airports in Germany went on strike
At several German airports, security personnel began a full-day strike in the early hours of Thursday morning. Those calling for the strike were employees of terminal security, personnel and cargo inspection, cargo inspection and service areas in Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart.
Only terminal security personnel are on strike at Karlsruhe-Baden-Baden and Cologne airports, while in Munich only security personnel, cargo and freight inspectors are on strike.
Berlin Capital Airport BER, Stuttgart Airport and Hamburg Airport noted on their websites that "there are no passenger flights departing." In Cologne, most flights were cancelled, and all flights at Karlsruhe-Baden-Baden Airport were cancelled or diverted, according to the website.
Service trade union Verdi hopes the strike will increase pressure on employers ahead of the next round of wage talks, scheduled for March 20. Verdi announced on Wednesday that it would extend the strike to Dresden, Hanover, Leipzig, Dortmund and Wieser airports. The strike there will take place on Friday.
Across the country, about 25,000 people work in air safety. Verdi is in talks with the Federal Association of Aviation Safety Companies (BDLS) over salary hikes, with demands that include increased functional allowances and overtime allowances.
