A large number of container transportation companies have suspended flights to push up freight rates

In its latest weekly newspaper, Alphaliner notes that cancellations of voyages on major east-west container routes are now part of normal shipping operations. In June and July, 10.8 percent of scheduled voyages were canceled on 25 Central China-Europe routes offered by the three major alliances, according to Alphaliner's data.

Alphaliner believes that limiting capacity should alleviate the pressure on some spot markets, while experts from Freightos, a container shipping platform, said: "There is a moderate increase in peak season traffic volume, coupled with the increase in blank voyages, and the spot freight rate of carriers has risen in recent weeks, ending the downward trend of freight rates for more than a year."

This strict capacity management is expected to continue given the recent increase in freight rates, which also means the suspension will continue until demand resumes. "There are already signs that there may be another full increase in freight rates next month," Atlantic Pacific Global Logistics said in an update released yesterday.
