Israeli shipping giant ZIM's revenue dropped significantly in 2023

Israeli shipping giant ZIM recently announced its 2023 annual performance report. ZIM's total revenue in 2023 dropped sharply to 5.16 billion US dollars, compared with 12.56 billion US dollars in 2022. This change was mainly driven by the sharp drop in freight rates. Last year, the average freight rate per TEU was only 1,203 US dollars, far lower than 3,240 US dollars in 2022.

In addition, ZIM suffered a net loss of $2.7 billion last year and achieved a net income of $4.6 billion in 2022. The adjusted EBITDA also plummeted from $7.5 billion to $1 billion, while ZIM announced an adjusted EBIT loss of $422 million last year, which is a significant performance gap compared with the EBIT of $6.1 billion in 2022.

Eli Glickman, president and CEO of ZIM International, said:"We have made great progress in promoting strategic transformation and have begun to achieve the expected favorable results. We are actively improving the cost structure, enhancing business flexibility and contributing to reducing carbon emissions. Our fleet renewal plan is proceeding as planned. After the new ship is delivered, ZIM's fleet will be more cost-effective, fuel efficient and sustainable."

He further pointed out:"Our cost per TEU is declining, and it is expected that 22 excellent new ships will be delivered in the rest of this year, which will further improve our operational efficiency. We will continue to review services to meet the changing needs of customers and seize attractive growth opportunities."

Glickman concluded:"Although the market is still full of uncertainties, our strong cash position enables us to maintain a long-term vision and focus on creating sustainable value for customers and shareholders. Looking ahead, we will continue to take decisive measures to benefit from the strategic transformation and expect ZIM to achieve an unprecedented strong position in 2025 and beyond."
