An international ship was hijacked by pirates
A Bangladeshi-flagged transport ship was hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean on March 12, according to Bangladesh's Kabir Steel Rolling Mill Group (KSRM).
The 23-member crew of Abdullah, formerly known as Golden Hawk, was taken hostage, carrying coal from the port of Maputo, Mozambique, and was heading for Hamriye port in the United Arab Emirates.
"The pirates have taken control of the ship, but the crew are in safety inside the cabin," a KSRM group chief told a local newspaper. "We are trying to establish contact with the crew," the official said.
The pirates, armed with heavy weapons and ammunition, have taken control of the ship, according to Captain Anam Chowdhury, president of the Bangladesh Association of Merchant Shipping Officials.
This is the second hijacking of a Bangladeshi ship in history. The first incident occurred in December 2010, when pirates hijacked the Jahan Moni in the Arabian Sea. Pirates held 25 crew members and the wife of the first mate hostage for nearly 100 days.
