A Singapore ship was mistaken for an American ship and attacked!
Houthi rebels mistook a Singapore bulk carrier for a U.S. ship and opened fire on it at around 3:55 p.m. Yemen time on March 8. The Singapore-flagged Propel Fortune, built in 2012, was hit by two anti-ballistic missiles but was not hit.
The Singapore Maritime and Port Authority told local media that the ship and its 26 crew escaped without any damage or injury.Ship tracking data showed the Propel Fortune left Damrah, India, on February 25 and was heading for the Arabian Sea.
Propel Fortune, previously owned by U.S. investment firm Oaktree Capital Management, was sold to Propel Shipping at the end of 2021, Clarkson's data shows. True Confidence, owned by Oak Holdings, also came under attack after it was sold to Greece-based Third January Maritime in February.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Salya acknowledged the attack in a speech on Houthi-run al-Masirah television on March 9, saying the militant group's navy carried out two operations. While the Houthi claimed they were targeting ships linked to Israel, ships not linked were also attacked.
Martin Kelly, senior Middle East analyst at maritime security consultancy EOS Risk Group, told the Financial Times that open source data used by the Houthi could be outdated when targeting ships, which could lead to attacks on ships with no links to Israel or the US.
