Amazon Japan Courier Strikes
Amazon Japan, an outsourced courier based in Nagasaki Prefecture, went on strike on the 8th. The courier believes that the original business entrustment of the second-class subcontractor they signed was unilaterally terminated by the first-class subcontractor. The second-class subcontractor also has distribution bases in Yanji City, Fukuoka City and Oita City in Nagano Prefecture, and the termination of the contract may cause about 200 people to lose their jobs.
The strike by couriers delivering Amazon Japan goods is the first in the country, according to the UNION Tokyo UNION. Amazon Japan said,"It is not expected to have an impact on delivery. Efforts will be made to deliver the goods according to the planned date."
According to UNION in Tokyo, the first-class subcontractor in Yokohama sent a notice to the second-class subcontractor in Kawaguchi City, Saitama last December, and will terminate the contract on April 8 this year.
The courier had previously started collective bargaining with the first-class subcontractor to ensure employment opportunities. The first-class subcontractor refused on the grounds that he did not directly sign a contract with the self-operated courier and did not participate in collective bargaining.
The actual situation of self-employed workers such as outsourced couriers is that although they are under the command and supervision of enterprises, there are cases of being forced to accept harsh treatment without the protection of the Labor Standards Law, which has become a social problem.
