Focus on logistics newsletter-Freight forwarders consider alternative routes

The delay in Panama Canal has led freight forwarders to consider alternative routes

As the threat of restrictions on the Panama Canal intensifies, freight forwarders may need to find alternative routes to avoid potential cargo delays.

"The delays in the Panama Canal have now reached 15 days or even longer, and may increase," said the CEO of Worldwide Logistics. "The importer/exporter community has not fully felt the impact, because these longer delays have just appeared."

The delays in those canals were caused by a dry spring and an impending El Nino weather pattern that lowered water levels in nearby Lake Gatune. As a result, the Panama Canal imposed restrictions in June to conserve water by maintaining the ship's draught until the next few months or a significant change in weather.
