Is the price of international air freight still falling in 2024?

The latest data from the Baltic Exchange Air Cargo Index (BAI) showed that freight costs from Hong Kong to North America fell 5.5 percent in February from a year earlier to $4.66 per kilogram. Prices were also falling in January, when they were at $5.22 per kilogram.

However, while prices are still behind 2023 levels-prices have been down for 18 months-the decline narrowed from the 15% drop in January as prices soared in early February ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, peaking at $5.30 per kilogram in the week ending Feb. 11.

Prices from Hong Kong to Europe fell 5% year-on-year to $4.18 per kilogram, but rose when trading rates were $4.12 per kilogram in January.

In the last week of February, the price of a Hong Kong-to-Europe air ticket even exceeded the price of a Hong Kong-to-North America air ticket, which is rare.

This may reflect some paradigm shifts as those hoping to sail to Europe look to find an alternative to ocean-going shipping services, which are affected by missile attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
