The German Train Drivers' Union held a general strike

Last Thursday, the labor negotiations between German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) and Deutsche Bahn (DB) broke down again. On March 5th, German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) announced that it would hold a general railway strike in Germany again.

Claus Weselsky, president of the German Train Drivers' Union, said that from 18 pm on March 6, drivers in the freight department first went on strike; Passenger drivers went on strike at 2 a.m. on March 7. The strike will last for 35 hours. "The 35 hours is to make everyone realize what the union wants: a 35-hour working week."

According to media reports, the main reason for the failure of the latest round of negotiations is still the issue of working 35 hours a week and providing full salary compensation for shift workers. German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) insists that Deutsche Bahn has not made enough progress on this issue.

The chairman also explained that a "wave of strikes" would follow. Unions would no longer give 48 hours' notice of work stoppage. "This means that railways are no longer a reliable mode of transportation," Weselsky said.

Martin Seiler, Deutsche Bahn's chief human resources officer, said the train drivers' union had gone on strike again because it had failed to meet its top requirements. "This is stubborn and selfish." Deutsche Bahn is still prepared to find constructive but realistic solutions. GDL's top requirements are impossible to meet and pose a considerable threat to the railway system.
