Singapore joins hands with Australia to accelerate marine decarbonization and digital transformation

The Singapore-Australia Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC) was formally established by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by the Prime Ministers of Singapore and Australia at the 9th Annual Leaders' Meeting in Melbourne on March 5,2024.

The MOU, signed by Chee Hong Tat, Minister of Transport and Second Minister of Finance of Singapore, and Catherine King, MP, Minister of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government of Australia, aims to accelerate the decarbonization and digital transformation of the ocean.

The MOU will also explore ways to streamline the exchange of digital information aimed at improving the efficiency of port clearance, port calls and ship movement between Singapore and Australia. The cooperation involves the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), Australian federal, state and territorial authorities and industry participants.

According to a statement, the two prime ministers expressed satisfaction with the strengthening of bilateral cooperation, especially in frontier areas such as digital and green economy. Both sides affirmed the significant progress made in the implementation of the New Australia Green Economy Agreement since its ratification in October 2022.

Notably, they highlighted recipients of the first $13 million (A$20 million) Green Joint Innovation Scheme grants announced recently to support collaborative efforts by Singaporean and Australian businesses to develop innovative products and services in the green field.
