International shipping exports to Nigeria can be cleared at this port

Adewale Adeniyi, acting general comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service, announced that Nigerian importers will soon have the opportunity to "clear goods from the port of Cotonou in the Republic of Benin."

The news follows a working visit to Nigeria by the head of the General Administration of Customs of the Republic of Benin and senior officials. During the two-day meeting, customs officers of the two countries discussed and reached a number of agreements aimed at "promoting trade relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin" while addressing the smuggling problem.

According to Adewale Adeniyi, this means that Nigerian importers willing to use Cotonou ports can clear goods at these ports, and we can calculate (levy) tariffs on these goods at their ports of arrival.

Adewale Adeniyi also highlighted the positive impact of the partnership between the two countries, saying it would "strengthen customs administration, trade facilitation and regional cooperation."

With regard to smuggling at the border between Nigeria and Benin, Nigeria had previously imposed a ban on imports and high tariffs on some goods, such as automobiles and rice, which led many importers to import goods into Benin and then smuggle them into Nigeria to avoid high tariffs.

       Adewale Adeniyi

       Adewale Adeniyi
