In 2023, Asia-Europe exported 16.58 million TEUs of international shipping containers


Container exports from Asia to Europe reached 16.58 million TEUs in 2023, according to data compiled by the Japan Maritime Centre (JMC) using information from the Container Trade Statistics (CTS). The Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA) said that figure was up 7.8 percent from the previous year.


By origin, containers from China rose 9.5 percent to 12.5 million TEUs, leading the overall outbound container traffic. Northeast Asia routes also reached 1.83 million TEUs, up 12.1 percent year-on-year. On the other hand, containers from Southeast Asia fell 3.7 percent to 2.24 million TEUs.


In terms of destination, container exports in Asia increased in an all-round way. Container freight volume to Europe increased by 1.4%, reaching 10.22 million TEUs; The western Mediterranean is 3.01 million TEUs, an increase of 11.4%; The eastern Mediterranean route was 3.35 million TEUs, an increase of 28.9%. Meanwhile, the import volume from Europe to Asia last year was 6.47 million TEUs, which was 3.5% lower than that in 2022, showing a downward trend for three consecutive years.


By origin, containers from Northern Europe decreased by 5.1% to 4.53 million TEUs, containers from Western Mediterranean decreased by 5.2% to 1.02 million TEUs, but containers from Eastern Mediterranean increased by 4.5% to 916,708 TEUs.


In terms of destinations, China's imports decreased by 6.6% to 3.2 million TEUs, and Northeast Asia's imports decreased by 12.1% to 1.38 million TEUs; However, freight volume in Southeast Asia increased by 8.7% to 1.9 million TEUs.

       按目的地来看,亚洲的集装箱出口全面增长。到欧洲的集装箱货运量增长1.4%,达到1022万标准箱;西地中海为301万标准箱,增幅为11.4%;东地中海航线为335万标准箱,增幅为28.9%。与此同时,去年从欧洲到亚洲的进口量为647万标准箱,比2022年减少了3.5%,连续3年呈下降趋势。


       按原产地划分,来自北欧的集装箱下降5.1%至453万标准箱,来自西地中海的集装箱下降5.2%至102万标准箱,但来自东地中海的集装箱增长4.5%至916708标准箱。


       按目的地来看,中国进口减少6.6%至320万标准箱,东北亚进口减少12.1%至138万标准箱;然而,东南亚的货运量增长了8.7%,达到190万标准箱。
