Suez Canal revenue decreased by 40% to 50%
Egyptian President Seyce said recently that due to the continuous tension in the Red Sea, the traffic volume of ships in the Suez Canal in Egypt has dropped significantly, and the revenue of the Suez Canal has decreased by 40% to 50% this year.
Figures released by the United Nations agency at the end of January show that the number of ships passing through the Suez Canal has dropped by 42% in the past two months.
Suez Canal connects the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, and its strategic position is important. Due to the continuous tension in the Red Sea, many international shipping companies temporarily avoid the Suez Canal route that needs to pass through the Red Sea waters.
Labille, chairman of Suez Canal Authority, said that although Egypt introduced measures such as toll discounts to attract merchant ships, it was not enough to offset the safety concerns of shipping companies.
Egypt received $9.4 billion in revenue from the Suez Canal in the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Canal revenue is one of the main sources of Egypt's national fiscal revenue and foreign exchange reserves.
