Increase by 18%! The container volume of the US West ports surged
In January 2024, the U.S. West Coast gateway ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach saw a surge in container volumes as retailers replenished stocks ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday. A total of 855,652 Teu was processed, up 18 percent from the same period in 2023.
Gene Seroka, executive director of Port of Los Angeles, said:"First, shippers have been restocking and moving goods quickly ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, which will slow production in Asia. Second, consumer spending and most of the strong economic data continue to accelerate the U.S. economy.
Holiday sales rose nearly 4 percent in the last quarter, employment growth was strong and other key indicators were also moving in a positive direction, Seroka said. Port Los Angeles loaded imports in January 2024 at 441,763 Teu, up 19 percent from last year, while loaded exports were 126,554 Teu, up 23 percent from last year.
The situation at Long Beach Port was similar, with January throughput up 17.5% year-on-year to 674,015 Teu. Among them, imports at Long Beach Port increased 23.5% to 325,339 Teu in January, while exports decreased 18.1% to 86,525 Teu.
Mario Cordero, CEO of Long Beach Port, said:"Retailers hoarded inventory in January because we usually see a slowdown in import activities during the Lunar New Year celebrations. We are ready to increase sales and hope to maintain sustained growth until 2024 as we gradually regain market share."
