In January 2024,US shipping container imports surged by 7.9%
According to the latest Global Shipping Report of Descartes Systems Group, compared with December 2023, the import volume of containers in the United States surged by 7.9% in January to 2.27 million TEUs.
Those figures are also up significantly from January 2023, according to the Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA), by. 9% and a strong 9.6% increase from pre-pandemic levels in January 2019.
Among the top 10 ports, imports increased significantly to 149,906 TEUs, up 8.4 percent from the previous month. Their overall share rose 0.9 percent to 85.4 percent compared to smaller ports.
Significant increases were observed at major ports such as Los Angeles (21.1% or 77,085 TEUs), Long Beach (15.1% or 48,054 TEUs) and Tacoma (12.2% or 5,831 TEUs). However, throughput declined at ports such as Houston (3.6% or 6,042 TEUs) and Charleston (4.1% or 4,331 TEUs).
Freight imports from the top 10 countries also rose sharply by 9.6 percent, equivalent to 146,240 TEUs. It is worth noting that China saw the largest increase, with an increase of 117,084 TEUs, while Germany saw the largest decline, with a decrease of 2,851 TEUs.
China's share of total U.S. container imports stood at 39.8 percent, up 2.4 percent from the previous month, according to a statement. However, despite the increase, imports from China fell 1.7 percent compared to a peak of 41.5 percent in February 2022. Still, the figures represent the highest percentage of U.S. imports from China in the past two years.
